South Sudan is an established world class petroleum producing area. It contains a large part of continent- wide Cretaceous rift basin system that has proved petroliferous in Chad and Niger as well as Sudan.
Block B, is located in South Sudan, is one of the largest frontier exploration areas in Africa, encompassing 118,48 sq. km.
The exploration of the "B" Blocks area commenced in 1980 with the collection of gravity data from 4,518 stations. The Gravity interpretation identified five internal basins and several minor internal basins. The largest of these basins measures 11 km by 0 km, and contains over 8,000 m of sediments. An additional Sub-Basin was evaluated to have important prospctivity.
After seismic reconnaisance, the high prospectivity of this Block was confirmed, with a great potential to find significant quantities of oil, but so far no wells have been drilld in the area.in the southern part of the two main prolific areas where more than 12 billion barrels of oil have been discovered.
The current proven reserves are over 1.5 billion bbls and original oil-in-place is estimated at over 8 billion bbls in the explored Mugland Basin
